Forester. Firefighter. Author.
Bill Beebe
Thirty years on America’s front lines. One story from the era before the welcome signs, the hero’s receptions, and the strangers who offered to buy your meal. There’s a version of history that gets told at retirement banquets and on the sides of fire trucks. Bill Beebe tells a different one.

Where the Fire Meets the Story
Growing up in the isolated river bottomlands of eastern Arkansas, Bill learned early that the land demands respect. He went on to spend three decades fighting wildland fires, in the sweltering South, across the remote expanse of Alaska, and on some of the most complex incidents in the nation. He has served on National Type 1 Incident Management Teams and a national Area Command Team. But it’s what happened before the hero’s welcome that compelled him to write.

Bill Beebe has spent over 30 years in the field, from the swamps and piney woods of Arkansas to the wilderness of Alaska. Whether you’re hosting a forestry conference, an outdoor recreation event, a veteran’s gathering, or a community storytelling night, Bill delivers.
Before We Were Heroes - Southern Fire
“There was a time when eating on the porch of a country store got us run off. When we were cursed and threatened. This is about that time.”
Long before wildland firefighters were welcomed into communities with handmade signs and free meals, they were the outsiders. The unwanted. In the 1970s, Arkansas, Bill Beebe, and his crew fought fire on two fronts: against the flames consuming the forest and against the communities they were trying to protect.
Before We Were Heroes is a story about courage under a different kind of fire. About doing your job when the people you’re protecting are telling you to leave. About a brotherhood forged not in glory, but in grit.
